K-9 death bill clears panel

Legislation motivated by the death of a Mishawaka police dog is moving ahead in the General Assembly. A House of Representatives committee passed a measure Wednesday that would make it possible to charge a person with a Class D felony if he or she causes the death of a police animal while driving under the influence of alcohol or other controlled substances. Class D is the least serious type of felony.

Three men arrested for drugs in vehicle

Three men were taken into custody Tuesday evening after a traffic stop resulted in discovery of drugs in the vehicle. According to the Ohio Highway Patrol, at just before 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, a trooper stopped a vehicle on Eastern Avenue for a traffic violation. Criminal indicators were observed, which prompted a drug-sniffing dog to be brought to the scene.

His name is ROGeR. And the big-eared, dark-eyed 3-month-old German shepherd has become the unofficial mascot for the Lakewood Police Department. He's named after the four officers killed Nov. 29 in a Parkland coffee shop. His name is derived from the first letters of the last names of the slain officers—Sgt. Mark Renninger and officers Ronald Owens, Tina Griswold and Greg Richards.

State police said a 2-ton drug bust Monday on a Douglas County highway was likely in Illinois' all-time top 10. "This was one of the largest drug seizures in state of Illinois history," said Capt. Stuart Shaver, administrator of the nine-county East Central Illinois police district that includes Douglas, Champaign, Macon and Vermilion counties.

 
Stow police dog to receive Red Cross courage award

The annual American Red Cross Acts of Courage Awards are going to the dogs. A new "Animal Hero" category will recognize Stow police dog Nero at the 14th annual event March 2. Each year, the American Red Cross of Summit and Portage counties recognizes residents who have acted courageously in emergencies. This year, 15 heroes will be recognized: 14 people and one German shepherd.

 
Donation will help Boise Police get a new K-9

Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Tuesday he had ordered the military to stop buying a British-made bomb scanner after tests proved it performed worse than a sniffer dog. Mr Abhisit said Thailand had already spent at least US$21 million (S$29.6 million) on between 700 and 800 of the detectors since 2003. 'We consider that a sniffer dog is better than the GT200,' Mr Abhisit told reporters.

Arno—A Dutch shepherd and the Madison Police Department's first "dual-purpose" dog—serving both as a drug dog and a patrol dog—Arno finds duct tape and other evidence hidden in a cluster of pine trees in a South Side marsh, helping to unravel the truth that missing UW-Madison student Audrey Seiler faked her own abduction in March 2004. Arno won the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Canine Handlers Association "Meritorious Narcotics Find of the Year" award in 2001, 2002 and 2004. He retired in 2006 after sniffing out nearly 130 pounds of marijuana, 12 pounds of cocaine and numerous firearms, and died of prostate cancer a few months later.
